I am still waiting to hear about whether I have been approved to student teach abroad in Costa Rica, I should find out within the next few weeks, but until then I have all ten fingers and toes crossed and hoping for approval! Each time a person asks about how my final school year is laid out, I get so excited to bring up my opportunity to student teach in another country. I didn't want to go through my college career without spending some time abroad because I know that if I didn't, I would most definitely look back and regret not going. I hope that this time in Costa Rica will not only bring me personal growth, but professional growth as well. I don't very often spend much time away from home and for that reason I am looking forward to the chance to spread my wings and become a bit more independent. I am excited to see how classrooms are run in Costa Rica and how it is that they have managed to reach a 96% level of literacy. My hope is that this experience will give me a one-up on other applicants to a bilingual position in a nearby school.
The reason that I chose Costa Rica is quite simple really, I love the idea of a warmer climate, the beaches, and most of all I love that I will have the opportunity to speak in Spanish daily. I began learning the Spanish language as a middle schooler and fell in love with the language. I continued with classes throughout my high school career and couldn't bear the thought of loosing the ability I had to speak in a second language and so continued on with classes in college, eventually picking it up as a minor.
I plan to say yes to new adventures while abroad and being open to stepping outside of my comfort zone. My goal is to build relationships that will allow me to curb some of the homesickness that I know will be difficult to escape from. And I hope to improve my Spanish during my time in Costa Rica as well.
Until my next post! Hasta luego! (Hopefully it will be a post about my approval to go abroad!)
